War of the Cupcakes II

Taking the weekend to visit friends in Utah was so exciting and one of the highlights had to be visiting local cupcake shops. My two best friends Katie and Jeni took me to the best cupcakeries in the Orem area: The Sweet Tooth Fairy & The Cocoa Bean. We tasted a variety of cupcakes flavor combinations and declared only one the winner.

Here are a few guidelines in determining whose cupcake is best:
  1. The Cake: Moist or Dry? Flavorful or Bland? Think to yourself: Can I eat this cake all by itself, without frosting, and be perfectly happy? Is it that good?
  2. The Frosting: Just right? Too sugary? Too buttery? The perfect combination of the finest and best ingredients can make the perfect frosting, as if it was whipped and piped just for that one cupcake.
  3. The Whole Package: Is the cake and frosting a cohesive unit? Do the flavors compliment each other? Or, are they completely opposite for each other.
Additional Factors:
  • The Bakery: Are they innovative? Constantly thinking of new flavors, new combination's?
  • Traffic Flow: Well known? Is it a popular place? Do people in town recommend them versus some other bakery?
  • Is the packaging prettier than the cupcake actually tastes?
Let's take some cupcakes to the battle field and determine the outstanding from the average!

The Sweet Tooth Fairy     V.    The Cocoa Bean

The Sweet Tooth Fairy
Cupcakes
  • Mayan Chocolate: Rich dark chocolate cake and chocolate frosting with a dash of cinnamon and cayenne pepper. Sweet and a little spicy.
  • Strawberry Shortcake: Moist vanilla cake with strawberry frosting and topped with a chocolate dipped strawberry. Strawberry fields forever!
  • Salted Caramel: Dark chocolate cake with a salty-sweet caramel-vanilla frosting. Of course two of my favorite things! Can't go wrong when they go so well together.

Not only were the cupcakes incredibly moist, but the perfectly piped frosting wasn't heavy or too much to handle. Classic flavors were paired with a splash of creativity and we devoured each, down to the last crumb. Just wish we ordered more!

The Cocoa Bean
Cupcakes:
  • Better Than Whatever Cake: Amazing chocolate cake with a delicate coating of caramel, topped with a whipped vanilla frosting & toffee pieces. This cupcake was delicious, moist and nearly perfect. Every bite was filled with just the right amount of each element. I would put this cupcake at the top of my list, along with Truly Madly Sweetly's Heartthrob cupcake.
  • Luscious Lemon Blueberry: A light lemon cake with blueberry frosting and topped with a blueberry. Definitely a pretty cupcake.
  • Mango Raspberry:Vanilla cake with raspberries rolled into the batter. Topped with a mango frosting and a fresh raspberry. The raspberries shined in this cake the most.
  • Phat Monkey: Incredibly fresh banana cake with a peanut butter frosting. Topped with a banana chip with mini chocolate chips. A peanut butter lovers dream.
  • Raspberry Chocolate Cheesecake: A rich dark chocolate cupcake served with a thin layer of chocolate, then topped with a cream cheese frosting and a fresh raspberry. So rich you may want a glass of milk nearby.

First off, both The Sweet Tooth Fairy and The Cocoa Bean are amazing establishments with their own signature palettes. Even though a cupcake may just be a cupcake, these two bakery's set their own standards for style, image and bring their very best to your plate.

So, with that being said and with much consideration the winner is ...
The Sweet Tooth Fairy

Not only were the cupcakes delicious, with a huge variety of seasonal and traditional choices, but this bakery is beautiful. It felt as if we were wraped up and topped with a pretty bow. They are the complete package! This decision wasn't made just because they recently won The Food Network competition Cupcake Wars, but that they actually create an amazing product, have a constant flow of devoted cupcake addicts and consistently deliver with innovation and inspiration. Thanks Sweet Tooth Fairy!
